Primary care is usually the first point of contact people have with the health system. Primary care is offered in community settings by a number of different health professionals. Primary care usually refers to medical care provided by general practitioners, but it could also refer to care provided by nurses, dentists, and pharmacists.

Primary care services are generally:

  • The pathway people usually take to other services
  • A point of coordination between the other services
  • Located in the community
  • Directly connected to people’s everyday lives and to the management of their well-being.
