WHAT ARE THE COMMON CAUSES OF HAND PAIN?

Hand pain can be caused by injuries, arthritis, and other health conditions, including autoimmune diseases.

The human hand is a complex and delicate structure containing 27 bones. Hand muscles and joints allow for strong, precise, and dexterous movements, but they are also prone to injury.

Hand pain can be of various types and have different causes. Hand pain can occur in many different parts of the complex skeletal structure, including :

  • bones
  • joints
  • connective tissues
  • tendons
  • nerves

Hand pain can occur because of :

  • inflammation
  • nerve damage
  • repetitive motion injuries
  • sprains and fractures
  • several chronic health conditions

Many conditions that cause hand pain can be treated. Medication, exercise, or lifestyle changes may help, depending on the cause of the hand pain.

causes of hand pain

ARTHRITIS

Arthritis (inflammation of one or more joints) is one of the leading causes of hand pain. It can appear anywhere on the body but is most common on the hands and wrists. There are many different types of arthritis, but the most common are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME

The carpal tunnel is a slim passageway of ligaments and bones at the bottom of the hand. It contains the median nerve (the nerve that runs from the forearm to the palm of your hand) and the tendons that move the fingers.

Carpal tunnel syndrome happens when the median nerve is compressed by a narrowing carpal tunnel. This narrowing can be caused by the thickening of the inflamed tendon, inflammation, or anything else that can cause swelling in the area.

DE QUERVAIN’S TENOSYNOVITIS

De Quervain’s tendonitis is a painful condition that affects the tendons around the thumb. Swelling of the two tendons around the base of the thumb causes inflammation around the tendons. This inflammation puts pressure on surrounding nerves, leading to pain and numbness nearby the base of the thumb.

GANGLION CYSTS

Ganglion cysts on the wrist and hand are usually painless but can be unsightly. It most commonly appears as a large lump or lump that emerges from the back of the wrist. They can also appear in varying sizes on the underside of the wrist, palmar joints, or the base of the fingers.

These cysts are filled with fluid and appear, disappear, and change size rapidly. When a ganglion cyst becomes large enough to press on nearby nerves, you may feel pain, tingling, or numbness around your wrist or hand.

GOUT

A complex form of arthritis, gout is a very painful condition that can affect anyone. Gout sufferers experience sudden sharp attacks of pain in the joints. Gout most commonly affects the joint at the base of the big toe, but it can happen anywhere on the wrists, feet, knees, and hands.

LUPUS

Lupus is an autoimmune disease, meaning that the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy cells and damages healthy tissues. Joint pain and stiffness are generally the first signs of lupus.

When lupus flares up, inflammation spreads throughout the body. This inflammation leads to the thin membrane around the joints thickening, leading to pain and swelling in the hands, wrists, and feet.
